The Landing Restaurant and Pub, Hagerstown, MD

My Darling Hubby and I went to one of the newest restaurant in Washington County last evening, The Landing Restaurant and Pub which is located in the old Richardson’s building at 710 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, MD.

The first thing you notice when you pull into the parking lot is the iconic sign is still there – just a little bit different and the main entrance is now in the middle of the building. Once you are through the front doors you are greeted by a friendly hostess, freshly painted walls, new carpet, fixtures and tables. The bar has been moved from the corner and is now center stage in the front section of the restaurant.

We arrived at around 5 p.m. on a Saturday evening and were still seated without a wait in the rear section of the restaurant near the trademark buffet station, which appears to be used just for lunch now. Within minutes of being seated by the hostess and given our menus, our waitress came for our drink orders.

Doug and I spent the next few minutes perusing the 4 page menu and I was happy to see so many seafood choices. He chose the flat iron steak, mashed potatoes and onion rings as an appetizer. Anyone who knows Doug is not surprised by this choice, since he is a true meat and potatoes man. I ordered cream of crab soup, a wedge salad and the shrimp bowl.

We only had to wait a little while before my soup arrived. It was creamy, full of crab and just the right amount of spices. Best of all it was HOT. I was about half way done my soup when my wedge salad arrived. I fell in love with wedge salad last year when a local chain restaurant added them to their menu. This salad was very good, they added a little hardboiled egg to mix and it was a nice addition. My only complaint was the plate was too small and it was hard to cut it up without the salad falling off the plate.

Doug’s onion rings were the next to arrive. You could tell right away this were homemade onion rings. Thick rings of onions dipped in a hearty batter and freshly deep fried. I snitch one while he wasn’t looking and they were wonderful.

Minutes later our entrees arrived. Doug’s steak was cooked just like he requested and he said the mashed potatoes were made from scratch. My shrimp bowl was just that a bowl filled with a dozen or so large shrimp, half dozen little potatoes and 4 small ears of corn in a tasty Old Bay broth. The shrimp were cooked to perfection, the potatoes could be cut with a fork and the corn had just enough heat. The addition of a little melted butter and a little Old Bay to dip the potatoes in and some cocktail sauce for the shrimp and I was set.

There was no room for dessert this time but I already have a plan for our next visit. We will bring our daughter and we can tried the fried pickle appetizer and still have room for the fried twinkle dessert.

The prices are reasonable, the service is good and the food was wonderful, so add them to your new places to eat in 2010 list and make plans to stop by today.
